Section 1 · LearnLearn the idea

From Ohio 5th Grade Science Power Workbook · Chapter 8 · Lesson 8.4.

Big idea: White light is not empty or colorless. It is all the colors of light together.

Learning goals: Explain what white light is made of

Explain why a white object looks white

Explain why black is not a color of light

All of them at once

Sunlight looks colorless, so it is easy to assume it has no color in it at all.

White light is actually all the colors of light together. That is why a surface can pick out just one of them to reflect.

White light is not empty light
White light is not empty light

White reflects them all, black reflects none

A white object reflects nearly all the colors in the white light that lands on it, so all of them reach your eyes together and it looks white.

A black object reflects almost none. Black is not a color of light arriving at your eyes — it is what you see when almost no light comes back.

Worked examples

Question: A student says white is the absence of color and black is a color. Explain why both halves of that are backwards.

Steps: Ask what a white object is doing with light. It is reflecting nearly all the colors back to you at once.

So white is not the absence of color — it is all of them together.

Now ask what a black object is doing. It is reflecting almost nothing, so almost no light is arriving at your eyes.

Answer: White is all the colors of light together, not the absence of color. Black is what you see when almost no light comes back to your eyes at all.

Common mistakes

White is all the colors, not none of them

A blank white page looks like nothing has been added to it, which makes white feel like emptiness.

With light it is the opposite. White light is every color at once, and a white surface is reflecting all of them back to you.

Check your thinking: Ask what is reaching your eyes. From a white surface, all the colors are. From a black one, almost nothing is.

Ohio connection

Why Ohio road crews wear bright vests

Highway workers across Ohio wear vests in bright yellow-green, not dark colors.

A bright surface reflects far more of the light from headlights back toward the driver, so the worker is seen sooner. A dark vest would absorb most of that light and send almost none back.

Think: Explain why a bright vest would work less well in a place with no light at all.

Remember

White: all in. Black: all absorbed.

White — reflects all the colors, absorbs almost none, stays cool. Black — reflects almost none, absorbs nearly all, warms fast. The same one idea explains both the color and the warming.

Practice tip

Remember: Color and warming are the same idea.

Tip: What a surface reflects decides its color. What it absorbs decides how much it warms. One question can ask about either, and the reasoning is identical.

Written practice

A classmate says, “White is the absence of color.” Explain why this is wrong, say what white light really is, and say what a white object does with the colors in it.

Sample response: White is not the absence of color. White light is all the colors of light together. A white object looks white because it reflects nearly all of those colors back to your eyes at once, instead of picking out just one the way a red apple does.

Scoring guide: 1 point: states that white light is all the colors together.

1 point: explains that a white object reflects nearly all of those colors back, which is why it looks white.

This targets the listed misconception directly, and 'white light is the combination of all colors' is an Ohio content limit.
