Multiply a vector by a scalar graphically and component-wise, and find the magnitude and direction of the result
Several sessions: instruction with grid drawings, modeled examples, independent practice with every magnitude and product re-computed, and a written explanation.
math-2017:N.VM.5a Represent scalar multiplication graphically by scaling vectors and possibly reversing their direction; perform scalar multiplication component-wise, e.g., as ππ (π£π£x, π£π£y) = (ππππ x, ππππ y).
math-2017:N.VM.5b Compute the magnitude of a scalar multiple ππππ using ||ππππ || = |ππ| ππ. Compute the direction of ππππ knowing that when | ππ | ππ β 0, the direction of ππππ is either along ππ (for ππ > 0) or against ππ (for ππ < 0).
Provisional targets. Clause-by-clause educational review is still pending.
Scope note. N.VM.5, with its parts a and b, is marked (+) in Ohio's Learning Standards for mathematics, which Ohio uses to indicate a standard "for students who are planning on taking advanced courses". It is taught here in full, as extension content for students on that path.
What a scalar multiple is. A scalar is an ordinary real number: 2, β1.5, Β½, 0. Multiplying a vector v by a scalar c produces a new vector cv. Its meaning comes from repeated addition: 2v is v + v, the displacement v done twice, so it points the same way as v and is twice as long. Extending this, 3v is three copies end-to-end, Β½v is half the arrow, and (β1)v is the additive inverse βv, the same length pointing the opposite way. In general, cv is the arrow v scaled by the factor |c|, reversed if c is negative.
A fully worked model, magnitudes. βvβ = β(3Β² + 1Β²) = β10 β 3.162. β2vβ = β(6Β² + 2Β²) = β40 = β(4 Γ 10) = 2β10 β 6.325. ββ1.5vβ = β((β4.5)Β² + (β1.5)Β²) = β(20.25 + 2.25) = β22.5 = 1.5β10 β 4.743. In each case the magnitude of the multiple is the absolute value of the scalar times the magnitude of the original: βcvβ = |c| βvβ. The absolute value is essential. The scalar β1.5 does not produce a negative length; lengths are never negative. It produces a vector 1.5 times as long, and separately reverses the direction. The algebraic reason: βcvβ = β((c v_x)Β² + (c v_y)Β²) = β(cΒ²(v_xΒ² + v_yΒ²)) = β(cΒ²) β(v_xΒ² + v_yΒ²) = |c| βvβ, and β(cΒ²) is |c|, not c.
The misconceptions. First, "a negative scalar gives a negative magnitude." No: ββ1.5vβ = 1.5βvβ, positive; the sign went into the direction. Second, "multiplying by a scalar between 0 and 1 reverses the vector." No: Β½v points along v, just shorter. Reversal is caused only by a negative sign, never by a small size. Third, "cv changes the direction angle by a factor of c." No: the direction angle of 2v is the same as that of v, not twice it. Scalars scale lengths, not angles; the only angle change possible is the 180Β° flip from a negative c.
Independent performance: Choose a vector v of your own with both components nonzero and not equal. Compute and draw cv for c = 3, c = Β½, c = β1 and c = β2.5. For each, compute the magnitude two ways (from the components and from |c| βvβ) and state the direction angle and whether it is along or against v. Then find the unit vector in the direction of v and use it to write the vector of magnitude 13 pointing against v. Finally choose a second vector w and compute 2v β 3w component-wise. Success criteria: every magnitude is nonnegative (the nonzero multiples of v have positive magnitude) and the two computations agree to within rounding; the direction angle of every positive multiple equals that of v and of every negative multiple differs from it by exactly 180Β°; the unit vector has magnitude 1 when checked; the magnitude-13 vector checks to 13; and a closing sentence explains why the direction rule needs the condition |c| βvβ β 0.
β Section 4 Β· Check8-question lesson practice test
An adult may read the prompts aloud. Answer independently with words, objects, drawings or a demonstration before opening the answer guide. Award 1 point for a correct result or claim and 1 point for a matching explanation or demonstration; where a question asks only for a result (a corrected sentence, a spelling, a count), a fully correct result earns both points, and the answer guide shows what a complete response contains. Record prompting separately. The total (two points per question) is local practice feedback, not an Ohio proficiency level.
βvβ = β(9 + 1) = β10 β 3.162. ββ1.5vβ = β(20.25 + 2.25) = β22.5 = 1.5β10 β 4.743 = 1.5 Γ 3.162. The magnitude rule is βcvβ = |c| βvβ with the absolute value of c, because β(cΒ²) = |c| and a length is never negative. The sign of the scalar shows up in the direction, which is reversed, not in the magnitude.
Problem 3
State the direction of cv relative to v when c > 0 and when c < 0, and say what condition must hold for the statement to make sense.
Show worked solution
When c > 0, cv points along v: same direction angle. When c < 0, cv points against v: direction angle differs by 180Β°. This requires |c| βvβ β 0, meaning c β 0 and v is not the zero vector; otherwise cv is the zero vector, which has magnitude 0 and no direction, so there is nothing to compare.
