math-2017:4.NBT.5 Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
Learning goal: Multiply up to four-digit whole numbers by one digit and multiply two two-digit numbers using place value, properties and meaningful representations. A large product can be decomposed into smaller products whose sum accounts for the whole quantity. The parts must cover the original factors without gaps or duplicate counting.
To calculate 1,248 × 6, decompose 1,248 into 1,000 + 200 + 40 + 8. Six groups of each part give 6,000 + 1,200 + 240 + 48. Add these partial products: 7,488. Each original unit belongs to one part of the decomposition, so every unit is multiplied by six exactly once.
The forty in the original number represents four tens. Multiplying six by four gives twenty-four tens, or 240, not twenty-four ones. Place-value errors often occur when a digit is treated without its unit. Name the represented quantity before multiplying, especially when the written calculation becomes compact.
An area model can represent two two-digit factors. For 23 × 14, use a rectangle with side lengths twenty-three and fourteen units. Split twenty-three into twenty and three, and fourteen into ten and four. The resulting four rectangles have side pairs 20 by 10, 3 by 10, 20 by 4 and 3 by 4.
Their areas are 200, 30, 80 and 12 square units. Add 200 + 30 + 80 + 12 = 322. These four nonoverlapping areas cover the whole rectangle. The equation 23 × 14 = (20 × 10) + (3 × 10) + (20 × 4) + (3 × 4) expresses the same decomposition as the picture.
A partial-products arrangement can combine some steps. First 23 × 10 = 230. Then 23 × 4 = 92. Adding 230 + 92 also gives 322. The second method groups the same four smaller products differently. It is not a different answer or a reason to omit the tens portion of fourteen.
Check common errors by interpreting them. A calculation of 23 × 14 as 23 × 1 + 23 × 4 gives 115, but it treats the one in fourteen as one instead of one ten. Another error adds only 200 and 12, ignoring the two cross rectangles. Point to each region as its product is added to prevent missing parts.
Estimation supports a check. Twenty-three times fourteen is near twenty times fifteen, or three hundred. The exact 322 is plausible. For 1,248 × 6, use about 1,250 × 6 = 7,500. A computed product near seventy-five thousand would disagree with that estimate and signal a place-value error rather than a small arithmetic slip.
Worked four-digit example: Find 2,306 × 4. Decompose into 2,000 + 300 + 6. The partial products are 8,000, 1,200 and 24, totaling 9,224. The zero tens term contributes zero, but its position must still be respected in standard form.
Worked two-digit example: For 34 × 26, calculate 34 × 20 = 680 and 34 × 6 = 204. Add to obtain 884. An area model split at thirty and four, twenty and six gives 600 + 80 + 180 + 24, the same total.
Guided practice: Build or sketch one array or area model and connect every region to an equation. Then solve a four-digit-by-one-digit example using expanded place values. Compare valid decompositions and explain why they preserve the full product.
Independent evidence: Solve unfamiliar products of both required types, including a factor with an internal zero. Explain the units of each partial product and give a reasonable estimate. A correct final numeral without a valid model or equation does not show the requested reasoning. Revise any diagram whose partitions fail to match the factor lengths.
An adult may read the prompts aloud. Answer independently with words, objects, drawings or a demonstration before opening the answer guide. Award 1 point for a correct result or claim and 1 point for a matching explanation or demonstration; where a question asks only for a result (a corrected sentence, a spelling, a count), a fully correct result earns both points, and the answer guide shows what a complete response contains. Record prompting separately. The total (two points per question) is local practice feedback, not an Ohio proficiency level.
Find 2,317 × 4 using partial products.
8,000 + 1,200 + 40 + 28 = 9,268.
In 2,317 × 4, why is 4 × 300 equal to 1,200 rather than 12?
The 3 in 2,317 stands for three hundreds; four groups of three hundreds make twelve hundreds, or 1,200.
Name the four areas in the displayed 23-by-14 model.
200, 30, 80 and 12 square units.
Why does adding only 200 and 12 give an incomplete product?
It omits the other two regions, with areas 30 and 80.
Find 3,045 × 7.
21,315: 21,000 + 280 + 35. The hundreds digit of 3,045 is zero, so that place adds nothing to the product.
Find 47 × 32 and explain a decomposition.
1,504. For example, 47 × 30 = 1,410 and 47 × 2 = 94; add them.
