math-2017:2.NBT.1 Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones. Understand the following as special cases:
math-2017:2.NBT.1a 100 can be thought of as a bundle of ten tens - called a "hundred."
math-2017:2.NBT.1b The numbers 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 refer to one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine hundreds (and 0 tens and 0 ones).
math-2017:2.NBT.3 Read and write numbers to 1,000 using base-ten numerals, number names, expanded form, and equivalent representations, e.g., 716 is 700 + 10 + 6, or 6 + 700 + 10, or 6 ones and 71 tens, etc.
math-2017:2.NBT.4 Compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.

📘Section 1 · LearnLearn the idea
A shared unit-cell size: one hundred contains 100 ones arranged as ten tens; one ten contains ten ones; one unit cell represents one. The large square is not merely one loose object when counting its unit value.
Learning goal: Read, write, represent and compare numbers to 1,000 using hundreds, tens and ones. A digit's place determines the value it represents. In 346, the 3 means three hundreds, the 4 means four tens and the 6 means six ones; they do not represent three, four and six loose objects.
A hundred can be composed from ten tens, and each ten can be composed from ten ones. A bundle of ten tens is called a hundred. The model shows one hundred as a ten-by-ten square of one hundred unit cells, one ten as a strip of ten cells and one as a single cell. These models must use the same unit-cell size so their relative values are meaningful.
In 706, seven hundreds contribute 700, the zero records no tens in the usual hundreds-tens-ones representation and six ones contribute 6. Write 700 + 0 + 6 = 706, or 700 + 6 when the zero term is omitted from the sum. Do not write 76; removing a zero digit from the numeral changes the places and therefore the number.
The round hundreds 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800 and 900 name one through nine hundreds with no additional tens or ones in the usual representation. Ohio lists the hundred and these round hundreds as special cases of place value. For example, 600 is six hundreds, 0 tens and 0 ones: six bundles of ten tens with nothing left over. One thousand is ten hundreds. Read 346 as three hundred forty-six and 1,000 as one thousand. Write number names alongside numerals to connect spoken language with place value.
Expanded form shows the values added: 716 = 700 + 10 + 6. The order of those addends may change without changing the sum, so 6 + 700 + 10 is equivalent. Other groupings work too: 71 tens and 6 ones also represent 716 because 71 tens equal 710. An equivalent representation need not use fewer than ten units of every place.
Compare three-digit numbers from the greatest place first. For 346 and 364, the hundreds match. Compare tens: four tens is less than six tens, so 346 < 364. There is no need to let the larger ones digit in 346 override the tens comparison. For 506 and 496, five hundreds exceed four hundreds, so 506 > 496 even though 496 has more tens and ones.
The symbols > and < name greater-than and less-than relationships. Read the entire statement aloud: “346 is less than 364.” The symbol's open side faces the greater quantity. Use = when quantities are equivalent, including 700 + 16 = 716. Equality compares values, not whether the two sides use identical-looking notation.
✏️Section 2 · ModelWork through the examples
Worked example 1: Explain a zero. In 706, the zero holds the tens place. Seven hundred six contains seven hundreds and six ones in the usual model. Its zero does not mean the number has no value, and it cannot be deleted from the numeral.
Worked example 2: Regroup a representation. Start with seven hundreds, one ten and six ones. Exchange seven hundreds for seventy tens, then include the additional ten. That gives seventy-one tens and six ones: still 716.
Worked example 3: Compare in order. Compare 438 and 431. Hundreds match and tens match, so compare ones: eight is greater than one. Thus 438 > 431. State which place first decides the comparison.
🧩Section 3 · DoPractice, demonstrate, and explain
Guided practice: Build numbers containing a zero, read their names and write expanded forms. Exchange tens for hundreds while preserving the unit amount. Compare number pairs that differ first in hundreds, then tens, then ones. Include equality examples written in different forms.
Independent tasks: Represent a three-digit number with a labeled model, write its numeral and name, provide an equivalent grouping and compare it with another number using a symbol and explanation. Include 1,000 as the boundary of the reading/writing range.
Feedback: If a learner reads each digit as a loose count, label the place and corresponding value. If an expanded form is concatenated incorrectly, recombine the place-value amounts. Credit equivalent representations when the total value is preserved.
✅Section 4 · Check8-question lesson practice test
An adult may read the prompts aloud. Answer independently with words, objects, drawings or a demonstration before opening the answer guide. Award 1 point for a correct result or claim and 1 point for a matching explanation or demonstration; where a question asks only for a result (a corrected sentence, a spelling, a count), a fully correct result earns both points, and the answer guide shows what a complete response contains. Record prompting separately. The total (two points per question) is local practice feedback, not an Ohio proficiency level.
Problem 1
What value does the 5 represent in 508, and why can the zero not be deleted from the numeral?
Show worked solution
The 5 represents five hundreds, or 500. The zero holds the tens place: writing 58 would mean five tens and eight ones, a different value.
Problem 2
How many hundreds, tens and ones does 800 have? How many bundles of ten tens is that?
Show worked solution
Eight hundreds, 0 tens and 0 ones. Each hundred is a bundle of ten tens, so 800 is eight such bundles (80 tens).
Problem 3
Write 483 in expanded form.
Show worked solution
400 + 80 + 3. Equivalent reorderings of those addends are also valid.
Problem 4
How can 52 tens and 4 ones represent 524?
Show worked solution
52 tens equal 520; adding four ones gives 524.
Problem 5
Compare 572 and 527 using a symbol and place-value reasoning.
Show worked solution
572 > 527, which can also be written 527 < 572. The hundreds match, and seven tens are more than two tens.
Problem 6
How many tens make one hundred, and how many hundreds make 1,000?
Show worked solution
Ten tens make one hundred, and ten hundreds make 1,000. The number name is one thousand.
Problem 7
Write the number name for 640 and the numeral for nine hundred seven.
Show worked solution
Six hundred forty; 907. In 907 the zero holds the tens place.
Problem 8
Which symbol, >, = or <, belongs in the blank: 300 + 50 + 2 __ 352?
Show worked solution
The symbol =. Both sides name the same value, 352, in different forms.
